The cross was removed from the bodies of prisoners through torture.

Cross tattoos were burned off the skin of Armenian prisoners held in a Baku prison.

This was stated by Siranush Sahakyan, a human rights activist and representative of the interests of Armenian prisoners at the ECHR.

“We have seen targeted actions against religious symbols.

In the case of cross tattoos, they were burned, the cross was removed from the skin through torture.

Or, although some limited books were provided to Armenian prisoners, the transfer of the Bible was prohibited or there were cases when they were forced to read the Quran,” she noted.

According to her, all this indicates that being a Christian in a Baku prison is more vulnerable, and perhaps being a bearer of Christian culture also makes dialogue with Azerbaijan difficult.
